Internet Learning Activity                                                      Alicia Kunkel

Results:

The students will:

  1. be able to connect current events with their personal lives.
  2. be able to access resources on the internet.
  3. be able to decipher the important facts within a news article.

 

Evaluation:

The students will fill out the worksheet provided in class.  They worksheet will then be turned in and to the teacher and graded on, completeness, thoroughness, and effort.

 

Curriculum:

This can be used as an introduction to any social studies class. Knowing what is going on in the world around them is important for not only students but as citizens of the United States.   Doing this activity it could spark an interest of current events in your student’s minds.  Also, it can be a great way to teach the students how to research a topic for better understanding.

 

Instruction:

1.      Students sit down at their own computer and get out a pen or pencil.

2.      Each and every student needs log on to the internet and go to CNN.com.

3.      Take 1 worksheet.

4.      Go over the instructions on the top of the worksheet with the entire class (I will read them out loud while you follow along).

5.      I will do an example article on the board to make sure that you understand what is expected of you. 

6.      Begin work on the worksheet.  (be sure to stay on CNN.com while doing your assignment)

Day 1:

 

Go to computer lab and fill out the worksheet alone.  The students will have the entire class period but they need to be done and turn in the worksheet before they leave for the day.

 

Day two:

 

Bring in articles from the local area from their home.  Each student will present their article in the Who, What, Where, When and Why format.  You need to reflect in your historical journals on the importance of knowing about current events.

 

Day 3:

Split into groups of 2-3 students and share your articles to rest of your group.  Your group will choose the most important articles in each category and present them to the rest of the class.  The students need to be sure to add how each article affects or does not affect them.

 

Day 4:

The class will vote on their favorite news stories from the compiled list that the teacher presents.  Each student will be asked to take one event and write a 1-page reflective paper on how they think the event affects or does not affect them personally.

Directions:

  1. Log on to the Internet and type http://www.cnn.com into the URL bar and press enter.
  2. You are now at CNN’s homepage.  On the left had side you should see a list of topics or categories.  In order to access these just click with your mouse once on the desired category.
  3. For example, of you decide to go to the “World” section, you will be sent to a website with a main story and then there will be smaller stories listed below or beside the main story.  Click on these with your mouse to read the story.
  4. Fill out the worksheet and answer all the questions on the worksheet.  You shouldn’t need another sheet of paper.  If you need, you can use the back of paper to extend your answers.
  5. Make sure you answer each question thoroughly and completely.
  6. Turn in the worksheet to me at the end of class.
